Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) is one of the most important covers for working people in Germany. It pays you a monthly pension if health problems prevent you from performing your occupation at 50% or more.
Statistically, one in four working people becomes occupationally disabled during their lifetime — often not through accidents but through mental illness, musculoskeletal disorders or cancer.
The statutory reduced-earning-capacity pension (Erwerbsminderungsrente) is rarely anywhere near enough to maintain your standard of living. On average it amounts to only around €1,000 per month — and is only paid if you can work less than 3 hours a day in any occupation whatsoever.
Our calculator is based on DIN 77230 — the German standard for personal financial needs analysis. The calculation takes three steps:
All calculations are non-binding estimates and do not replace individual advice.
In principle, everyone who lives off their income — employees, civil servants and the self-employed. The younger you are when you sign up, the lower the premiums usually are and the easier the health assessment.
Usually not. The full statutory pension averages only around €1,000 per month. It is also only paid if you can work less than 3 hours a day in any occupation whatsoever — not just your trained profession. BU insurance protects your specific occupation and pays considerably more.
DIN 77230 sets 80% of your net income as the target value for the BU pension. Beyond that, we recommend up to 100% for optimal protection: while some costs (e.g. commuting) disappear during disability, new ones can arise (e.g. care, therapy). Our calculator shows you both values.
Civil servants with lifetime tenure receive an incapacity provision that can reach up to 71.75% of their pay, depending on years of service. For young civil servants with few service years, however, the provision can be considerably lower. Civil servants on probation or revocable status have no entitlement at all and urgently need private cover.
Premiums depend on many factors: age, occupation, health, desired pension amount and term. As a rough guide: a 30-year-old office employee pays approx. €40–80 per month for a €1,500 BU pension. The younger and healthier you are at sign-up, the cheaper it gets.
No. The calculation serves as a non-binding orientation per DIN 77230. Your actual statutory pension and civil-service provision depend on many individual factors (e.g. exact contribution years, earning points, pay grade). For a binding needs analysis, feel free to contact us.
